Do open windows invalidate holiday cottage insurance?

With soaring temperatures over the last week, there are signs that the ‘barbecue summer’ that was predicted over the last 3 years (but never materialised) could actually happen this year.

Combined with a surge in UK holiday bookings due to the ash cloud chaos and the weak Euro, UK holiday let owners are set to have a record year.

However, holiday home owners are advised not to neglect their holiday cottage insurance obligations during soaring temperatures. Cottage owners could risk invalidating their cottage insurance by leaving windows or doors open during hot spells.

By leaving windows and doors wide open, holiday home owners are offering an open invitation to opportunistic thieves. Many insurance policies do not cover theft by non-forced entry, such as entering through an open door or window.

Does your policy?

Here are our tips to protecting your holiday home:

  • Check if your policy covers theft by non-forced entry, if it doesn’t change to an insurer that does – such as Schofields (we provide wide theft cover). If you holiday let your cottage then it’s essential you have this cover as it’s likely guests won’t be a security conscious as you, leaving windows open when they go out.
  • Ensure windows and doors are locked before leaving the holiday home, even if just popping out for a few minutes. Failure to carry out basic safety measures could be considered negligence by insurers, which could invalidate cover.
  • Check your insurance covers theft of keys following a break in as it is likely you will need to replace locks.
