NAIC Committee Targets STOA Fraud

The National Association of Insurance Commissioners’ (NAIC) Life Insurance and Annuities Committee at its fall meeting formed a new working group to evaluate next steps on a model bulletin designed to help regulators deal with the practice of stranger-originated annuity transactions (STOA). The action follows a public hearing held by the NAIC in May to begin to gather information on what the organization describes as a relatively new phenomenon, identified in similar fashion to stranger-originated life insurance transactions, or STOLI. Firefighters Watch as Home Burns to the Ground

It’s a scene that would make most firefighters sick, and angered most of the locals, including the fire department itself. Firefighters in a small Tennessee town recently responded to a house fire just outside of city limits, but instead of fighting the blaze, they were ordered to let the double-wide trailer burn to the ground. Turns out, the owner had not paid his $75 firefighting subscription fee and was therefore not covered by the municipal fire department.

Homeowner Gene Cranick pleaded with firefighters to put out the flames, saying he had simply forgotten to pay the bill and that he would gladly pay them the money if only they would put out the blaze. H

Home sharers’ policy ideal for students

A student house is a dream come true for burglars. With multiple occupants (many of whom will in all likelihood have at least some of the student must-haves such as TVs, laptops, mobile phones, MP3 players and many other gadgets besides), the burglar can make a clean sweep in next to no time.

Sadly, when students get together to share a house, insurance is not always uppermost in their minds. They are far more likely to spend time devising a washing up or cleaning rota than spend time surfing the net looking for a suitable policy.

Endsleigh Insurance have recently come up with a novel policy which should make life a lot easier for those sharing accommodation this academic year.

Pros and Cons of Umbrella Insurance: Why I Just Bought Some

I have to be honest with you. I am scared to death of being sued. We live in such a litigious society now. It is estimated that over 15 million lawsuits are filed in the United States every year, and over $250 billion is awarded each year in lawsuits. The statistics are completely staggering.

In Arizona, civil lawsuits cost only $80 to file. Many lawsuits go to trial and take several months to complete because they will often include discovery motions, mediation hearings, garnishment hearings, findings, judgments and results that are often appealed or contested.

Forced Flood Insurance

Until hurricane Katrina, the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) flood insurance program was fully self-funded through private flood insurance contributions for decades. But Katrina caused so much damage from flooding that FEMA is now billions of dollars in debt. It has recently sought to protect itself from disproportionate payouts by reevaluating the nation’s flood zones, and the new maps are forcing many to buy flood insurance who never have before.

Flood insurance is not like homeowners insurance. For one thing, it doesn’t cover all of your valuables in the event of a loss. By
