Florida Agent Sells Worthless Homeowners Insurance to Elderly

As the result of an agent selling worthless homeowners insurance policies to Florida residents, dozens of elderly are now at risk of losing their homes, the Department of Financial Services said on Thursday. Numerous complaints were filed against the agent only to reveal that she had been using money received to pay her personal expenses.

Residents Left Without Coverage

According to the department, 50 complaints were filed with the state that residents in Sarasota County had paid their insurance premiums for as long as two years to Debra K. Wanless who was supposed to be providing coverage from Lloyds of London (which is not a regulated carrier in Florida).

Dog Bites Represent More Than One-Third of Home Insurance Claims

A new report from the Insurance Information Institute (I.I.I.) revealed that dog bites represented more than one third of home insurance claims in 2010. Despite this high number of claims, the I.I.I. found that dog bites remained relatively consistent with those in the year prior.

Insurers Confident in Their M&A Activity

Insurer mergers and acquisitions are heating up: Aetna recently announced planned acquisitions of Prodigy Health Group and Genworth’s Medicare supplement business; Allstate Corp. purchased Esurance and Answer Financial from White Mountains Insurance Group Ltd.; UnitedHealth Group Inc. struck several deals in the past year. And, according to a new Towers Watson survey, insurers feel confident in their M&A activity. U.S. insurers believe that they are more successful at accomplishing consolidation and strengthening competitive position compared to their non-insurance counterparts, the report, “M&A Role of the Manager,” indicates.
